Tia.

    1. Limpy-Seagull on

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna): Thrives in heavy clay and blooms with white flowers in spring.

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa): Tolerates compacted soils and produces white blossoms in early spring, followed by sloes.

Dog Rose (Rosa canina): Ideal for clay soil, offering pink summer flowers that attract pollinators.

Field Maple (Acer campestre): Displays vibrant autumn foliage and grows well in clay soil.

Viburnum: Produces clusters of flowers and berries, suitable for heavier soils

Though they will all likely do well in clay, there’s no harm in improving the soil with grit and compost before planting to give them a helping hand.

    2. Second that Hawthorn will thrive and bloom in heavy clay. Deceptively beautiful imo. If you don’t want to deal with the pricks, or want some winter interest, I’d second the hornbeam suggestion.
