Clipped this from an avocado plant I grew from a pit. Put in water just to see what would happen. It has had this one leaf for over a year now, and little nubs around the bottom of the stem but no roots. Recently it has started growing what looks to be some new leaves and I’m very surprised… How is it doing this with no roots? Can I help it grow roots at this point? I assume transferring to soil won’ help without roots but I don’t know…
Any ideas? Is it just a last ditch effort at survival but is ultimately doomed…?
Perhaps you could try assisting with some rooting hormone as a last attempt?
Those little bumps at the bottom are the formation of new roots and it’s able to take up water that way. Give it some more time. It’s almost cooked!
Is it possible to switch to a smaller vessel? I’m wondering how much light it really gets in that jar, as it doesn’t look like it actually raises above the glass. Where is it being kept? My experience with cuttings is that they tend to root best in bright light.
Avocado trees need @ 15 yrs before they fruit.
Did you give it any rooting hormones?
