Ich habe also einen Kompostbehälter, der auf dem Kies sitzt und im Grunde genommen von Beton in mindestens 5 m Radius umgeben ist. Ich lasse es nie geöffnet. Mir ist kürzlich aufgefallen, dass jemand Besuche daran macht und diese tiefen Löcher hinterlässt, vielleicht etwa 7-10 cm Durchmesser. Wer könnte es möglicherweise sein?

Have seen mice living in compost heaps too, but given the size of that hole it is more likely a rat. Do you have a cat you can put on guard duty?

Almost certainly rats. They can dig under the floor and come up. Or maybe even through the plastic at the back of the box.
They will be using it as a food source. Especially in winter.
