I’ve propped them by putting in potting mix and filtered light. They also root in water

You could probably just dump some soil on top of that pile and get a thriving colony of the stuff in about a few months. Carefully potting it or putting in water will also help

I personally am constantly just sticking these back in the dirt, when I try to prop in water they usually rot

Purple Heart is pretty tough to mess up as long as it’s warm enough. You could root them in water or plant directly into dirt or just leave them out and they will probably try and grow some roots anyway. I’d cut them into small pieces and plant them in soil that you keep moist, maybe with a plastic bag as a cloche if you watch for mold. I like to pull the leaf off the bottom node of each cutting and plant the cutting so the exposed node is blow the soil line and one or two leaves are above. If it turns green or gets extra leggy give it more light. If you’re extra lazy you can just stick some smaller cuttings in your existing pot so it looks a little fuller. No need to root them before sticking them in as long as you keep the pot watered. I really like the densely planted look you can achieve with a bunch of vines planted close together.

Very forgiving. Two nodes per cutting minimum (not more than 5 though), remove bottom leaves. Let callus over for a day then put in soil, water or whatever.
