Perlite turns to dust from abrasion I believe. Peat & coco fiber in soil break down at a rate determined by various factors. The warmer & more moisture, the faster they break down. Other possible factors might include how much dead root matter from previous plants is left & possibly remnants of whatever killed them. Invasion of insects/mollusks probably depends on how well the containers stay sealed over time, but in general animals looking for shelter would enter before it gets very cold.
