Shade won’t kill off Rhododendron, the wrong soil pH eventually will. As for a replacement, a bit of seasonal colour might be an option. Rudbeckia ‘Goldstrum’ is a nice perennial, and fairly bombproof. My one is now in full flower, facing north.

I would recommend a hydrangea paniculata. Wims red is my favourite, they do well in a shadier spot.
