Damn you are right to be upset. They’ll come back next year though. You’d get no flowers this year.

  2. Might have done you a favor if it was overgrown. We had a big old thing when we moved in here 38 years ago. I pruned and pruned and never did get it rehabilitated. Look
Around the net for information then do your best and give it some time. Good luck

I cut mine down to shoulder height every few years, and they love it. You’ll miss out this year but next year they’ll be even more lush. Use this opportunity to get any deadwood out.

Lilacs are incredibly hard to kill. It should bloom again next year, and in about 3 or 4 years it will be big again.

Our neighbors hired landscape people who did this to our lilac. Cut it 6in from the ground. My dad was furious.

It took two years or so, but it looks great, and it’s a huge bush now. Life finds a way.

  7. It’s good for them. Thin the stalks and pinch the new shoots every 8 ton12 inches to get branching. Thin shoots where you don’t want them. Thin them suckers from the ground as well.

At this point i would suggest taking the cuts down to a couple inches off the ground. Then play with its shape when it starts coming back up from literally everywhere.
