Toosh.

    Carex pendula

It’s actually going down through rather than pushing up through.

omfg we have these ALL OVER our front garden 😭 we dug up the big one and about 25 little ones popped up everywhere

Don’t compost this little thug – you’ll only end up spreading it – bin it with the green waste.

  4. ~~What is it ?~~

    > Carex pendula, commonly known as hanging sedge, is considered potentially invasive due to its ability to spread rapidly through rhizomes and seeds, particularly in moist habitats.

One of the biggest mistakes I made in a previous Garden was planting Sedge (Carex) in my pond/damp garden. It looks great, but then it just takes over.

I sprinkle a bottle of salt over the weeds once a year then all I have to do is sweep them up once they’ve withered.

Both my gardens are all patio, there is no other soil to contaminate, nor is there any on the neighbours property so it is safe to do so.

I pull a few of these in my garden every year, they do get massive if you don’t take them out early.

We moved into our current home five years ago. The first thing we did was to dig up the big ones of whatever this was.

Five years later the bastard spawn are still appearing in our garden.

I remember a gardener telling me diesel is the best or a blow torch. Dunno if he was just messing with me.

I quite like them, but damn they seed everywhere. Easy to pull up as long as you don’t let them get too large.

It’s awful stuff, and in my experience it is not easy to pull up, so don’t let it get away from you

I shudder every time a client refers to them as ‘ornamental grass’

Please let me pull it, the only good thing about them in the garden is the satisfaction of getting rid of them. 😑

If that is your ass crack it’s growing out of the see a doctor!

I’ll see your pendulous sedge hassle and raise you creeping buttercup.

For large sedge grass, I cut the leaves as much as possible, stab the crown with a big screwdriver and then immediately dribble boiling water into the crown, cover with plastic to exclude sunlight and weigh it down with something heavy. I repeat the process regularly. One in my daughter’s garden took 18 months to weaken and die off. Digging up the huge rootball isn’t fun.

Increase biodiversity with zero effort, and greens up the place to please our minds

They look quite cute when they’re small but I hate them with a passion. Did my back in digging up a big one once. Never let them seed or they’ll take over.

It’s Pendulous Sage and will start growing all over the place if you don’t get it out asap. I’ve even been in a garden centre selling the bloody stuff!

We bought a house this year and I spent a good amount of time wandering around the garden looking remnants of these little b*stards – I think I got them all but who knows. Will be checking again in the spring

I guess your neighbour’s one is casting seeds about?
Tempted to rip them out and fill cracks?

Have you tried putting salt on it, salt is a great weed killer

  22. SacredandBound_ on

They’re useful in my NNE facing garden in a part where nothing else grows……

  23. Brought a house with huge sedges and mint planted straight into the ground, misery jackpot!

  24. It’s a very annoying plant. We have an annual family event in our garden to pull the seed heads off & burn them. It is good at keeping horsetail & ivy away though.

  25. Put sodium bicarb down where you don’t want anything to grow…again. Will kill it dead and it won’t come back. Will rot away to if left
